04:03 The Calories notion is false.
13:54 We have a mechanism in our body that determines how fat we get.
19:39 Your body weight set point is being reset upward.
20:23 To reset your body weight set point, you need to get your insulin low for a significant amount of time in order to get your leptin levels low.
24:14 When you eat all day, you are telling your body to store fat all day and you get fat.
25:07 Fat storage is a hormonal signal, not a caloric signal.
29:41 Intermittent fasting is not about how many calories you eat. It is about the time that you are not eating.
31:24 Insulin inhibits lipolysis, stopping you from burning fat.
32:24 On a 7 day water only fast, your insulin falls and you switch from burning food to burning fat.
33:13 During fasting, as your insulin falls, you get a counter-regulatory hormone surge, increasing adrenaline, noradrenaline, growth hormone and cortisol.
33:53 There is a period of gluconeogenesis at around 24 hours into fasting. You will burn protein, not muscle.
35:40 If the old protein is never broken down, you cannot build new protein.
37:26 You get much better retention of lean mass with an intermittent fasting strategy over cutting calories.
38:24 Biggest Loser style diets sink metabolic rates.
42:15 Women can fast. Ghrelin is the hunger hormone. Women have higher ghrelin spikes.
43:01 If you don’t eat over 24 hours ghrelin spikes 3 times, at breakfast, lunch and dinner, then drops. Hunger does not continue to increase.
45:04 Cravings disappear with fasting and keto.
49:38 You can eat high carb foods and keep low insulin.
51:09 Sugar is more fattening than other carbohydrates.
53:51 Natural foods have natural satiety mechanisms.
01:08:31 Type 2 diabetes is misunderstood by doctors.
01:10:08 Blood glucose is a symptom of type 2 diabetes. We treat the symptom, not the disease.
01:12:15 Type 2 diabetes is reversible, except for the very late stage.
01:16:42 The longer you’ve been overweight the more it effects weight loss.
01:18:08 There are conflicts of interest in medicine. Much evidence is produced by pharmaceutical companies. Universities take funding from industry and produce shoddy research.
01:30:21 Bias in nutrition science is rampant and has stymied the advancement of actual science. Special interest needs to be out of research.

  1. Cutting calories works. The problem is willpower when doing that. Hormones and hunger will cause cravings that very few people can resist.

  2. He's right in what he's saying with how the body works, but he's simplifying calories in and out way too much. The use of calories in diet has always taken into account how the body uses the stuff you put in it, therefore the macro nutrient breakdown and removal of fiber from carbs/totals after the fact. We know it's different. But the calories measurement is a great blanket simple number to help estimate. It's been proven that you can lose weight by reducing calories even if you eat garbage from 7-11, but they also acknowledged how bad it was for health. We know. Saying Calories are irrelevant is wrong.

  3. This was good. But what about the study's that show reduced calorie intake lengthened the life of mice? Isn't he kinda saying that that study is a bunch of bologna now?

  4. I have recently been experimenting with I.F. And I love the results. Watching this has helped me understand why it works. Thank you guys for making this information free. Everyone needs to get educated on insulin and the effects it has on our bodies. Thanks again.

  5. Everybody's raving in the comments about this video but I can't forward this thing to people… It's full of repeated segments. Why does this video have repeated segments??

  6. Excellent video – science made simple, but not patronising. Learned so much and suddenly a lot of things make sense. Thanks Doc

  7. This is wonderful stuff, but everyone insists that if you fast, your body goes into starvation mode and conserves calories. Is there any truth to that?

  8. I think we got the idea of eating whenever did come from going to School. We had to bring a snack & lunch to School and were looked down on if the child didn't have breakfast before School. We also had Tv advertisements to encourage people to eat because we use vision to eat as well. For example, that looks yummy, I think I will get that now. We have gone over the years of instead of having sweets as a treat, we had them whenever we wanted to have it. I call it the "spoilt" society. I have been doing Keto for 6 months now with doing OMAD as well as 2 meals a day but I eat them close together to get a larger fasting window. Thank you for doing this video as it all makes so much sense.

  9. I agree with 99% of what he says, however, a few minor points did not make sense to me. He advocates for intermittent fasting/water fasting and says caloric restriction is a way to failure in other videos. Isn't that what bariatric surgery is though? Isn't there a high failure rate, where patients gain the weight back and more? I'm confused about him advocating for bariatric surgery. Any input?

  10. I think it’s good to note that anything that creates an insulin effect = a meal. So you may think that you only eat 3 times a day, but a coffee with milk (with or without sugar) is a meal to your body and gets an insulin response. A really easy way to reduce the number of times you ‘eat’ a day is to only drink water or other zero calorie drinks. NB I think zero calorie fizzy drinks elicits an insulin response. I still to water, black coffee and tea.
