AVOID THE EMERGENCY ROOM !!! My wife had knee replacement surgery @ HSS and a week lated we needed to have her circulation checked in her leg. We went to the emergency room as directed by Dr. Haas. We arrived around 3:00 P.M. after a two hour drive from New Jersey and she was not discharged until midnight. It took 9 hours to have an ultrasound test done. The staff had no clue as to who and when we would see someone. They would get annoyed if you asked them questions. They showed no compassion or genuine concern for anyone. I asked one nurse to have the charge nurse come and see me so we could find out when my wife would be having her ultrasound, she never came. I went and found the same nurse about one hour later and asked her why the charge nurse nver came, she said she was probably too busy. That about sums it up. Too buys to hear the concerns of there patients. The process is completely broken and needs to be redesigned along with extensive training for the staff. The objective should be to provide quality care quickly. The entire area is all jammed with patients because no one ever leaves. Patient rotations should be happening much quicker. There should be a patient advocate who trouble shoots the system and can get things done. Also, the emrgency room area is dirty, no it's disgusting.
So, unitl major improvements are implemented, DONOT go to the emergency room @ NY Presbyterian on 68th Street. If you do go bring a very thick book along with a whole lot of patience.
