the food here is great, as are the drinks, but the wifi signal (linksys, another is netgear -- you can also ask the bartender for the password to the bar's wifi connection, appropriately named "McAleers") is sporadic, although they are free. The signal is strongest by the window (McAleers is strongest in the back, by the jukebox). I think these connections belong to a neighbor upstairs or across the street. There are only a very few outlets (one located by the table closest to the door, another is located at the table in the back, closest to the bathrooms).

  • GrrlScientist on 04/09 Sez: Okay, I take back all my cranky previous comments because MacAleer's Pub FINALLY added a free wifi connection. So now you can drop in for beer (happy hours; M-F, 3-7pm); excellent food (their wings rule), and you can access the internet for free. They do have outlets, although not too many, and they are difficult to find and one of these outlets doesn't work. They also don't like you putting your laptop on the bar after 7pm, but otherwise, this is the place to go for free wireless on the UWS!
  • GrrlScientist on 04/06 Sez: Unfortunately, the wireless here has inexplicably been deactivated, and there are no alternative free wireless sources to be found nearby, so don't bother trying this spot for internet access. worse, the owner keeps telling me he is going to have free wireless for all of us to use, but he has yet do add it, after six months of promises! if you are in the neighborhood, you should instead go to Dublin House (on 79th, between Amsterdam and Broadway) which has free wifi AND good beers on tap!
